A 15th Century watermill with two overshot waterwheels in the care of the National Trust.
This major re-roofing and repair project was undertaken in 2012 for the National Trust with Lucy Stewart acting as project architect and dealing with all client / contractor communications. The building had been identified by the NT as requiring significant repairs, due to the timber frame of the watermill having moved and taken the closely associated roof timbers with it. The heavy stone slate roof had caused the timber rafters to sag, and the whole structure had warped and moved to one side.
This project entailed developing close working relationships with a complex client, and working with an experienced conservation contractor. The Local Authority and English Heritage were closely involved in the overall process, as listed building consent was required for some of the repairs and alterations. This required careful and consistent liaison to ensure that all parties were kept informed of progress and that everyone was happy with the conservation proposals.
